Uruguay rises 10 positions in the United Nations digital government ranking
SUMMARY:
Uruguay rose from 35th to 25th place in the United Nations Digital Government Index (E-government Survey) 2024 and is consolidated as the country with the most growth in America between 2022 and 2024.
INFORMATION:
This index, which evaluates the quality and accessibility of digital services in 193 countries, places Uruguay in second position in America, only behind the United States, and highlights it as the undisputed leader in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The report notes that Uruguay has made significant improvements in the provision of online services and in strengthening its telecommunications infrastructure.
For example, the Online Services sub-index showed significant progress and reflects the expansion and improvement in the offering of digital services to the public. Likewise, the Telecommunications Infrastructure sub-index experienced growth, which shows the country's efforts to modernize and expand its connectivity.
Furthermore, at a global level, Uruguay stood out in the Digital Citizen Participation sub-index, by moving up positions and consolidating its focus on promoting interaction between citizens and the State through digital platforms that facilitate public participation in decision-making.
These achievements are part of the Uruguay Digital Agenda 2025, a strategic plan led by the Electronic Government and Information and Knowledge Society Agency (AGESIC), whose objectives are to improve the quality of public services, promote digital inclusion and create a resilient infrastructure.
The agenda is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and seeks, in addition to efficiency, to implement a standardized and multi-channel model for citizen access to government services.
Among the key initiatives, the report highlights the digital signature solution —firma.gub.uy—, which allows the validation of cross-border signatures, promoting the use of advanced electronic signatures in the region. This tool is an example of how Uruguay is leading in innovation and digital facilitation in Latin America.
A determining factor in achieving these advances has been the development of specific technologies for the digitalization of procedures and document management. In this context, STATUM has played a fundamental role.
